Xperia Tablet S not so splashproof, recalled due to build flaw
Oct. 8, 2012 (2:31 pm)
More than a few Nexus 7 owners found that their brand new tablets were shipped with a slight quality-control issue: the LCD display was loose and could separate from the rest of the case, leaving a gap as wide as 1mm. It’s a problem that turned out to be easy enough to deal with, and now Sony has run into a similar situation with its recently-launched Xperia Tablet S.
This time, the concern is about more than just unwanted movement and clacking sounds. Sony’s concern is that the sliver of space between the Xperia’s screen and housing could allow water to seep in and wreak havoc on its internal components.

BlackBerry PlayBook 2.1 update goes live with SMS, portrait email

3thoct,2012

bbbBlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 with Bold 9930RIM's attention around its QNX-based platforms might revolve around BlackBerry 10 as of late, but don't think that it's leaving BlackBerry PlayBook users behind. A PlayBook 2.1 update is rolling out today that fills in some of the gaps left by 2.0 earlier this year. Habitual messagers can now start SMS text messages directly from the tablet when tethered through BlackBerry Bridge; they also get overdue support for a portrait view in email, calendars and contacts. If communication isn't the cornerstone of your life, you'll still find a few niceties such as Android App Player support for the camera and in-app purchases, device encryption that extends to personal data and wireless printing beyond the local network. For now, you'll have to be an owner of the original, WiFi-only PlayBook to leap on the 2.1 train today -- those who sprang for the usually carrier-bound PlayBook 4G LTE should get their upgrade within a month.

Editorial: Square gets the attention, but credit cards

rule

By  Oct 3nd 2012 at 2:00PM

Editorial Square gets the attention, but credit cards ruleLower Manhattan, Pearl Street, the Financial District. A Starbucks with broad windows, great for people watching. Sipping my $5 flavored coffee, I watched a homeless man sit on the sidewalk. I liked him immediately: his sharp gaze and thoughtful expression. When I left, I squatted down next to him and put five bucks in his jar, contributing the cost of my first-world coffee to the man's case for survival. We talked. He knew his tech, this man of no possessions, describing his favorite productivity gadgets of the past decade, scorning Apple for form over function. He had been living on the street day and night for two years. My five dollars was "huge," he said. I knew that was true only microcosmically. He liked cigars. That's where the cash would go.
